Rebuilding Your Credit Following Bankruptcy

How to Rebuild your Credit after a Bankruptcy

We are the attorneys of Clark Law Offices, in Phoenix, Arizona. Since 2004, we have been helping people get a fresh start through Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Chapter 13 bankruptcy, or alternatives to bankruptcy, including debt settlement plans. We know that there are a lot of myths about bankruptcy. Two of the prevailing misunderstandings, perpetuated by the giant credit industry, is that you will face foreclosure on your home and that you will never be able to rebuild your credit. The truth is that you may actually be able to keep your house and car. Your family won't have to live in a cardboard box. You can actually qualify for credit relatively soon after filing bankruptcy because some creditors recognize that you carry a lighter debt load and are less likely to run short of money for monthly payments.

There are many simple things you can do to rebuild your credit following a bankruptcy:

  • Apply for a secured credit card, make monthly payments on time
  • Open a credit union account, contribute to it monthly
  • Make all of your "reaffirmed" debt payments on time
  • Make sure your credit report reflects the removal of all unsecured debt
  • Establish a sense of permanency by not moving
  • Check your credit score and credit history report regularly for mistakes

While it may be true that you generally won't get the lowest interest rates offered to prime credit customers, you will find that there are many lenders who will provide opportunities for loans, often within a few years after your bankruptcy is finalized.
